By the Numbers: Struck-by Injuries

In a recent report from the Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR), struck-by incidents are on the rise.

WHO

• More than 800 U.S. construction workers died in struck-by incidents from 2011 to 2015, which is a rate higher than any other industry.

• Highway, street and bridge workers accounted for 264 of the 804 construction fatalities during the period.
• Construction workers 65 and older experienced the highest rate of struck-by fatalities.
• Highway maintenance workers, power line installers, and excavating or loading machine operators experienced the most struck-by fatalities.

WHAT

• Of those 804 deaths, 52% involved flying or falling objects and equipment, with the remainder caused by being hit by a vehicle.
• 114 worker deaths were the result of being struck by a passenger vehicle, and 112 workers died after being struck by a truck.
• More than half (51%) of fatalities involving being struck by an object or equipment were caused by falling objects or equipment.

WHERE

• 57% of the struck-by vehicle fatalities occurred in work zones.
