Common Workplace Injuries Fatality File

One worker falls to his death and another is critically injured after 100 foot fall from the Manhattan Bridge

At approximately 1.50 pm, a 37-year-old independent contractor fell 100 feet from the bridge and was pronounced dead where he landed near the intersection of South Street and Pike Slip near FDR Drive, police said.

The second man, 55, was hospitalized in critical condition after he fell from the bridge. Both men were wearing harnesses, but were briefly unclipped while they were shifting to another location on the structure.

Police at the scene said that wind ‘may have been a factor’ in the freak accident. They could be seen interviewing a group of contractors in yellow vests, although it isn’t certain that they were the deceased man’s coworkers.

The MTA delayed or rerouted subway lines B, D, N, Q and W, which run on the bridge, as police investigated.

Neither man’s identity has been released pending the notification of their families.
