Rooftop Where Worker Felt Lacked Guardrails

A building where a construction worker fell to his death Monday violated city safety regulations by failing to install guardrails, according to online records.

The worker fell from the top of the 10-story office building at 434 W. 33rd St., police and fire officials said, landing on scaffolding above the sidewalk.

The man died from the impact, police said, and another man who was traumatized by the incident was taken to Bellevue Hospital, the FDNY said.

Officials have yet to identify the deceased worker.

According to Department of Buildings records, the building, which houses Planned Parenthood offices among others, was in the middle of a $442,094 facade renovation that included work on its rooftop skylights.

Calls to the building’s property manager, Newmark Grubb Knight Frank, were not returned. Howard L. Zimmerman Architects, which filed permits for the renovation, did not respond to requests for comment.

As of Tuesday afternoon, a stop work order remained on the property, though workers were on the scaffolding surrounding the building.

According to the order, in addition to the lack of guardrails, there was also unsafe storage of materials on the roof.
