Irrigation Pipe Safety

ELECTRICAL LINES

  • Use caution around power lines as contact between irrigation pipes and power lines will cause electrocution.
  • Do not stand irrigation pipes upright to empty excess water or to chase animals out of pipes.
  • Whenever possible, use water pressure to flush debris from lines.

SAFE TRANSPORTATION

  • Travel at safe speeds and only as conditions permit.
  • No riders on tractor, trailer, or trailer hitch.
  • When transporting loads of pipe, make sure pipe is properly secured to avoid injuries from the load shifting.

PROPER HANDLING

  • Use proper lifting techniques when handling irrigation pipes.
  • Use two people to move and handle pipe whenever possible.
  • Avoid sticking fingers and hands into pipe coupler when connecting pipes.
  • Never drink water from irrigation pipes as it may contain fertilizers and other chemicals.
  • Do not use irrigation water to wash hands and face due to chemicals that may be present in the water.
