Facts and statistics on fires in non residential structures including hotels and motels.

In 2005‐2009, local fire departments responded to an estimated average of 115,500 structure fires in non‐residential and hotel/motel properties per year. These fires resulted in annual averages of

  1. 110 civilian fire deaths,
  2. 1,610 civilian injuries, and
  3. $3.1 billion in direct property damage.
  • One out of every 5 such fires was a contained trash or rubbish fire that did not spread to other contents or the structure itself.
  • In three of every five fires in these properties, flame damage was confined to the object of origin. Fire spread beyond the room of origin in only one‐quarter (28%) of these fires.
  • Cooking equipment was involved in one of every five (19%) of the fires in these properties.
  • Eighteen percent were intentionally set.
