Steel Company Fined $60,000 for Safety Violation

A Saskatchewan steel company is fined after a worker is seriously hurt in a machine entanglement incident.

Evraz Regina Steel of Regina, SK, has been fined $60,000, the largest OHS penalty issued in Saskatchewan in the 2011/2012 year, in connection with a serious injury.

A worker was badly hurt in January 2009 after becoming entangled in the motor drive shaft of a crane hoist. Evraz pleaded guilty to failure to ensure that there was an effective safeguard in place to prevent workers from contacting a dangerous moving part of a machine.

Another charge against the company was dropped in Regina Provincial Court.
