Hearing Loss
Hearing loss in the workplace is a significant occupational health concern caused by prolonged exposure to high levels of noise. It can result from working in environments such as construction sites, manufacturing plants, or airports where loud machinery and equipment are common. Over time, repeated exposure to excessive noise levels damages the delicate structures in the inner ear, leading to gradual hearing impairment. Symptoms may include difficulty understanding speech, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and decreased sensitivity to sound. Prevention measures include engineering controls to reduce noise levels, administrative controls like rotating job assignments to limit exposure, and the use of personal protective equipment such as earplugs or earmuffs. Regular hearing screenings help detect early signs of hearing loss, allowing for timely intervention and management. By raising awareness, implementing effective control measures, and promoting a culture of hearing conservation, workplaces can mitigate the risks of hearing loss and protect the long-term hearing health of their employees.
