Man working to unload beams from truck killed by falling cargo

WEST VALLEY CITY — A worker was killed after the steel beams he was working to offload from a truck fell on him Monday, police said.

Crews were dispatched to a report of the accident at Warner Trucking, 2290 S. 5370 West, about 12:15 p.m., West Valley Police Lt. Amy Mauer said.

"During the process of unloading, the cargo became unstable and fell from the forklift, pinning our victim," she said.

Other workers performed first aid on the man until emergency crews arrived. First responders also worked to save the man's life, but he died at the scene, Mauer said.

The man's name and age weren't immediately released as police looked to notify next of kin. Mauer said the worker killed was apparently the driver of the truck that was hauling steel beams but didn't know which business he worked for.

She also didn't know where the man was from other than the vehicle he was driving was from out of state.

What caused the materials to fall on the man wasn't immediately known and remains under investigation.

Police said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was made aware of the incident and will assist in the investigation.
