Schoolbus Safety – Handling Unruly or Distracting Students Fatality File

School bus incident in Highland ends peacefully

Police in the town of Lloyd rushed to a Sunoco gas station on Rte. 9w in Highland, after receiving a 911 call about students going "out of control" onboard a school bus, said Lt. James Janso of the Lloyd Police. According to Janso, three students from the Kingston School District's special education program ranging in age from 10-13 are being taken to St. Francis Hospital for evaluation following the incident. When the four patrol cars and an ambulance arrived at the scene, officers found the bus pulled over and inside were eight children along with a school bus monitor and the bus driver, he said. The officers immediately tried to diffuse the situation and calm the children down, said Janso. According to police, it's not clear who placed the 911 call, which was received at around 2:30pm and may have originally been reported as an "assault.". A man who answered the phone inside the convenient store at the Sunoco identified himself as the clerk on duty. He said at no time did anyone come inside to ask for help and he did not call 911.
